Choosing A Perfect Domain Name

A memorable domain name is the best one,
because it sticks in the mind.
A perfect business name is a nice choice.
If you choose a phrase or sequence of the words that describes your product,
is also a good one,
for example, officestationery.com.
[[[[[[[[[ 'the edittor notes : ::::: i.e. the generic domains
]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]
The domain names that arouse a visual image can also be used
as these are easy to remember,
like
GreenValleyResort.com.
Short names are much better than the longer names,
but
if adding the length makes more memorable
then
you can choose the longer one.
You should make sure that
your domain name is easy to pronounce, and [[thence]] soon
you will hear people talking about your domain name
many times a day,
in conversation,
on the phone, or
in other radio ads.
It is better to
avoid the name that only works in print,
and also needs to be spelled out when spoken aloud to be understood

Synergy Between Domain Names & Keyword Based Search Engine Optimization Strategies
Jun
28 [[2007]]
[[.....]]
Over time the role of the domain name as an SEO tool has changed,
but currently I think
they carry a lot of weight for the associated exact match search.
Depending on how they are leveraged going forward they may or may not
continue to be a strong signal of quality to search engines
Domain Names & Link Anchor Text
When I first got in the SEO game
a good domain name was valuable
because if you got the exact keywords you wanted to rank for in your name
it made it easier to get anchor text related to what you wanted to rank for.
For example,
being
seobook.com made it easier for me to rank for
seo book and seo.
That link still exists, but nowhere near as strongly or broadly as it once did.
[[.....]]
Domain Names in Action
As Google started getting more aggressive at filtering anchor text,
they started placing
more weight on the domain name if the domain name exactly matched the keyword search query.
They had to do this
because
they were filtering out too many brands for the search query attached to their brand.
Some examples of how this works:
At one point,
about 2 years back,
SeoBook.com stopped ranking for seo book
due to a wonky filter
that also prevented Paypal for ranking for their own name for a little bit.
A friend recently 301 redirected a scholarship site on a bad URL to College Scholarships.org.
The site's ranking for the exact phrase college scholarships went from 100+ to top 20 in Google.
But, it still is a long way from #1, and it still is at 100+ for college scholarship (singular). In competitive industries you need a lot of links to compete, and the redirect also caused the site to slip a bit for some of the other target keyword phrases that the site used to rank for.
When you launch a new site on a domain name like mykeywordphrase.com
and get it a few trusted links
it should
almost immediately rank for mykeywordphrase.
A friend launched Online Nursing Degrees.org about a week ago.
That site ranks #1 in Google
right now for those keywords ran together OnlineNursingDegrees.
That site also just ranked #118 in Google for the phrase Online Nursing Degrees.
As the site ages and gets more links it should be easier to rank for that exact phrase
(but that domain probably wouldn't help its rankings much for stuff like nurse degree).
My domain name SearchEngineHistory.com
ranked better than it should have
for the query search engine history
when its only real signs of trust were
age and domain name.
It was nowhere in the rankings for just about any other query.
[[.....]]
The search traffic trends are moving toward consolidating traffic
onto the largest high authority sites,
so
it probably is not a good idea to have 100 deep niche domain names like
OnlineNursingDegrees.org,
OnlineNurseDegrees.net,
OnlineNursingSchools.com,
OnlineLawDegrees.com,
OnlineParalegalDegrees.net etc
when
you can cover a lot of those topics with a singular broad domain
like
Online Degrees.org.

thence , our

[[.....]]
For local businesses
a keyword matching domain might be
a way around paying to list
in all the regional directories and other related arbitrage plays
Domains that use familiar language and sound credible also have a
resonance
that helps build trust, make the information seem
more credible,
easier to link at,
easier to syndicate, and
easier to do business with.
It is hard to estimate the value of that
since much of it is indirect, and
few have measured the affect of domain name on linkability or clickability of a listing outside
of paid search arbitrage.

What about situations where the keywords are all there but in reverse order.
For example:

Yeah. I was always wondering about hyphens as well.
It is a sign
that domain name is not that expensive
and lower chance of having a good content on it
so
Google could count a less weight on it
but it is just my speculation.

I buy keyword domain names for creating quick niche sites
and they always rank quickly.
Number 1 in less than 24 hours was a standard assumption a while back
but
i think you are right in what you are saying.
My own methods are failing me slowly as Google home in on yet another loophole in their algo.
I have been penalised recently for anchor text so
I can confirm what you are saying is definately happening right now.

(too much weight)
Take a look at "image hosting"
Guess who is rank #1?
Not imageshack.us,

Maybe or maybe not.
That is how important domain name is to SEO.

The value of companies should in theory be equal to the total worth of their future cash flows, Buffett explained. But some businesses, such as sports clubs, movie studios and important national newspapers, have an extra value Buffett called the "B factor." .. The B factor at Dow Jones is huge, probably second only to the New York Times in the whole world," Buffett said.
Ughh .. The New York Times? Come on Mr. B. .. maybe in 1978 when the BeeGee's sang about it in Saturday Night Fever. We can all understand the tenor of what Mr. Buffet is speaking to of course. There is a power, influence, branding and cachet value that transcends the cash-flows the business can bring.
Domain names are the clasic "B Factor" investment of course. Why else pay 140X for a name like snoringcure.com ($8,000+ at Snapnames.com today). It will be a frosty day in Hell when PPC revenues pay for that one, but I now own a great snoring name! I can sell products relating to the malady .. some of them may cure my snoring (much to my wife's relief). It is generic, descriptive,
easy to buy traffic for,
easy to arbitrage - I could probably live off that one name! Man you gotta love domains. NYT example notwithstanding.. Buffet is right.

Frank - I thought your business revolved around ppc as opposed to developing or selling domains?
If so, you are not likely to develop snoringcure.com to make a profit on your $8000.Or have I misunderstood?
***FS*** Everything is in development.. it's just happy coincidence that the best names to develop also bring a trickle of PPC revenues. In this case, the intrinsic value of a name as a brandable site, as a tool for buying traffic from search engines far and away eclipses what I can make selling PPC right now.
Posted by: JP May 07, 2007 at 12:12 AM
Frank,
Domain name newbie from UK here & a regular reader of your blog.
What volume of typed-in traffic would you expect for that domain name? What's so good about that domain name that prompts you to pay 8K? Why not develop a new snoring related domain name and save the 8K? I presume I'm missing something here!
JC
***FS*** Just a trickle John.. its about the intrinsic value of the name.
Posted by: John Cronin May 07, 2007 at 03:34 PM
$8,000 could really be a fair price if you take the revenue that could come of it in let's say 5 year period. There are probably a billion if not more people with snoring problems. And I'm sure that cures for this aren't too cheap. A huge potential market and expensive products... I don't think it would take 120 years to earn those $8,000 back.English isn't my native language, so excuse me if this sounds stupid... but did you buy this name and what was the point you tried to make in the end?
***FS*** No your English is fine.. multiples are maleable
Posted by: Business Card Guru May 11, 2007 at 03:40 AM
Frank, what are your thoughts about highly-descriptive three-word generic .coms, given that you mentioned lower PPC names often are very developable. Do you own many/any currently?
For Example:
NewWirelessPlan.com
Do you see increasing value in these generics, IYO?
P.S. I was on Grand Cayman recently snorkling Hamburger Reef and thought about you working there. Coffee "on me" next time!
***FS*** I like compound search phrases providing they have a high overture style rank apart.. Reason? If people are searching for the phrase as a part of common vernacular via the engines, then it's possible to harvest those visits from the engines via arbitrage or paid search plays. Also the sitres are more recognizable to the average surfer as a common phrase they are "looking for anyway".. That said.. I also like memorable multi word strings if they are catchy and have resonance: seewhathappens.com <-- recent superbowl commercial.

Same outlook for longer famous phrases?

Frank,
Domain name newbie from UK here & a regular reader of your blog.
